There are several steps you should follow when planning a successful marketing campaign. You should define your customer, choose your targets, outline your budget, create your content and then monitor your progress. Read on to find out about each one of these important steps.

1. Define your Customer

It's important to know who you want to market your good or service to. Ask yourself these questions:

  • How old is my customer?
  • Is my customer male or female?
  • What does my customer do for a living?
  • What level of education does my customer have?
  • How much money does my customer make?
  • Does my customer care deeply about the environment or charity?
  • How does my customer get information (Internet, newspaper, television, radio, word of mouth)?

Once you answer these questions for yourself, and you better understand the type of person you are marketing to, you can move on to choosing your targets.

2. Choose your Targets

The next step in building a successful marketing campaign is deciding the types of mediums you want to use to get your message out. There are several different kinds of mediums you can utilize-- they include the Internet, leaflets, posters, direct mailing and the press. For example, if you used the Internet, you could create a webpage, post ads, or start a blog. Read more about the strengths of different marketing mediums on the following page.

3. Outline your Budget

Once you know exactly who you want to reach and how you want to reach them, it's essential that you decide how to budget your resources to realize these goals.  In this step, add up all the expenses you should incur in hitting the different targets you've chosen, and compare that to your budget. If the total expenses exceed your budget, then prioritize your targets. Make a list of the targets that would introduce you to the largest amount of your customer base and pursue those. Set the other targets aside in a separate list as alternates.

This is also the time to consider creative marketing strategies that might help at a little to no cost, such as word of mouth, creating a free blog, or starting an email list your customers could subscribe to.

4. Create your Content

Next, make your leaflets, build the webpage, and get your message out there! Make sure to completely proofread any copy that goes live, as erroneous information deters customers.  Also, focus your content on the customer instead of yourself. Use words such as "you" and "yours" instead of "we" and "I". Create an emotional experience for the consumer, using positive words, photographs and colors. Oftentimes, paying attention to these details helps to more quickly and convincingly entice your customer base.

5. Monitor your Progress

After you have created and displayed the content for your marketing campaign, it is important that you regularly check to see how well you are reaching your targets and converting these into sales. For example, if you build a new website, and direct customers to it using ads, check to see how many of these visitors actually become customers from looking at your website or advertisement. Understanding how well your marketing campaign is faring will allow you to make adjustments to increase its success. After all, you want to reach your customer through your targets, and ultimately convert these encounters into sales!
